How you can Verify a 2006 LS7 Crank Sensor

1Turn the ignition to the “On” position and locate the vehicle’s diagnostic data port. It is situated underneath the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle, directly above the pedals.

2Plug the scan tool’s diagnostic data cable connector into the vehicle’s diagnostic data port. Power on the scan tool and navigate for the “Live Data” screen, where you can watch different data parameters in real-time. Each scan tool (depending upon the brand and model) has a slightly different menu structure. The “Live Data” menu is generally a sub-menu of the PCM functions menu. Consult your scan tool’s owner’s manual if you’re having trouble locating the “Live Data” screen.

3Scroll down until you see the “Engine RPM” parameter. Crank the engine while watching it. If this parameter remains at “0” while the engine is cranking, that is a good indication that the crankshaft position sensor is faulty and must be replaced. But the crank sensor wiring must be checked to ensure that the sensor is receiving the proper amount of voltage before determining that the sensor itself is faulty.

4Open the hood and locate the crankshaft position sensor. It is mounted towards the passenger side of the engine block, adjacent for the starter. It has a three-wire connector attached to it. The wire colors are dark blue/white, yellow/black and light green.

5Set a digital multimeter to “DC Volts” and connect a back-probe attachment for the positive-voltage test lead. Ground the black test lead, then have an assistant crank the engine while you back-probe the light-colored wire on the left side of the connector. The DMM should display a reading of 5 volts. If the DMM reads less Car Diagnostic Tools, there is a problem with the voltage supply from the powertrain control module and not the crank sensor. If the DMM reads 5 volts Auto tools, the crank sensor is receiving the proper amount of voltage and is not functioning properly and therefore is faulty.
